Shannon Vinyard – Biographical Sketch
Shannon Vinyard is president of Vinyard Technology Company, Inc. a consulting and technology development company located in Hartford, AL. Established in 1998, this company focuses on energy, power generation, emissions, and business development. Mr. Vinyard has over 35 years direct experience in this field. His company has provided consulting services to over 50 commercial, governmental, and university clients around the world.
Mr. Vinyard received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Agricultural Engineering from Auburn University. Raised on a row-crop and livestock farm outside Albertville, AL, he has significant practical, hands-on experience in a wide range construction, maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and fabrication activities. As a company president for the past 20 years, his multi-disciplinary experience includes working with contracts, accounting, legal, marketing, human resources, production, unions, logistics, and engineering departments in various organizations.
He was formerly President, CEO, and cofounder of Vinyard Engine Systems, Inc. (1993-1998) in San Antonio, Texas. This venture capital-funded company specialized in conversion of diesel engines and vehicles to alternative fuels such as compressed and liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas for both OEM and aftermarket customers in the USA, Europe, and S. Korea.
Previously Mr. Vinyard was employed by Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, TX (1984-1993), last serving as Director of Engine Research from 1988-1993. Directing a staff of 50 engineers, this multi-million dollar department provided contract research and development services to a world-wide clientele, ranging literally from “lawn mowers to locomotives” on a host of fuels.
Mr. Vinyard served on active duty in the U.S. Army (1980-1984), last serving as a Captain and Assistant Manager of the Propulsion Systems Division, U.S. Army Tank Automotive Command, Warren, MI. His military specialties included Maintenance Management, and Research & Development. Before that he served as an artillery battery Executive Officer in the Alabama Army National Guard in the Elba, AL unit.
Previous professional activities include the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), including numerous international leadership roles. Mr. Vinyard also served as an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Biosystems Engineering Department at Auburn University. He continues to serve there as an invited lecturer on professional development and time and cost management topics. He is an instrument-rated private pilot.
Married to his wife, Jan, for over 32 years, they have two sons. One is married, an Auburn engineering graduate/Southern Seminary graduate now serving as an engineer-missionary. The other son is in college in the business aviation program at Auburn. Mr. Vinyard has served in numerous leadership roles in local and regional civic, charitable, and church organizations. These include past Board Chairman of Wiregrass United Way, and Sunday School Teacher and Deacon at Hartford Baptist Church.
